Capitalism and Socialism

"In short, people decided that it was impossible to achieve any of the good of Socialism, but they comforted themselves by achieving all the bad. All that official discipline, about which the Socialists themselves were in doubt or at least on the defensive, was taken over bodily by the Capitalists. They have now added all the bureaucratic tyrannies of a Socialist state to the old plutocratic tyrannies of a Capitalist State."

Esse livro foi escrito antes da primeira guerra mundial. Acertou em cheio em praticamente tudo, especialmente nos resultados horrendos da eugenia na Alemanha. Chesterton, há um século, tinha uma visão de mundo mais clara sobre o mundo de hoje do que a maioria, incluindo as classes supostamente pensantes.

Obviamente, é inevitável que idéias como estas sejam sistematicamente omitidas no universo cultural de nosso país. Não exatamente por uma conspiração, mas pelo inexorável estrago causaria nos cacoetes culturais estabelecidos. O tão prezado establishment cultural rui catastroficamente frente a devastadora argumentação.

Trata-se de uma obra que quase certamente é muito melhor do que quase todo o conteúdo completo de livrarias brasileiras, com raríssimas exceções. É difícil que se pretenda compreender o mundo contemporâneo sem o conhecimento das idéias básicas descritas neste livro.
